Outside the reception on the Waterloo Road at Molineux, the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club is the statue of their greatest ever captain, William Ambrose Wright.

Billy Wright was also the England captain and the holder of 105 international caps. He was born in Ironbridge in Shropshire on the 6th February 1924. Billy’s childhood home on Belmont Road bears a plaque stating that a football legend lived here. At the time of writing my poem the house is up for sale. It overlooks the historic bridge that is spread over the River Severn and in 1787 it became the first iron bridge to be built.

Billy Wright’s statue outside Molineux is a magnificent sight and an obvious meeting place on match-day. Many times I have observed the work of art and thought that the sculpture had captured the moment. There’s Billy, captain of club and country running out onto the pitch with ball in hand. Following him over hundreds of games would be footballers worthy of legend status themselves. And there is the heart of my poem, they followed did men of ten.

Billy Wright's statue was made by Warwickshire based sculpture James Butler.

On Saturday 16th March 2013, I was fortunate to be a guest at the 90 year Celebration evening for Shropshire Schools and Colleges FA held at Lord Hill Hotel, Shrewsbury. The SSCFA described Billy Wright as their most famous alumni.

It came as a surprise yesterday (Oct 2013) to find that my poem about William Ambrose Wright (Billy Wright) was read out, to music may I add, last February on Birmingham Mail's Extra Time Podcast.

It mentions that anyone visiting Molineux cannot fail to miss the statue of the great Wolves and England captain.

Accordingly it's the first time to have a reading, bringing a bit of culture to the programme.
