Auchtermuchty is in Fife near to the main A91 route to St Andrews. James V in the year of 1517 made it a Royal Burgh therefore fairs and markets could be held there. The majority of locals in the mid 1800’s worked in the linen industry and more recently Whisky. The name of Auchtermuchty came from Gaelic words meaning upland slope of the wild pig and its flag bears a picture of a boar. Jimmy Shand the famous accordion player lived there and also the Scottish duo the Proclaimers. We visited there in April 2008 and were fascinated by the narrow wynds and buildings. My mother recalls my dad calling it ‘Actamuchty’ whenever he mentioned it although I am led to believe locals abbreviate it to ‘Muchty’.
